Cultivar Origin:
This hybrid was created by intentionally crossing Philodendron verrucosum and Philodendron melanochrysum by Keith Henderson in the 1980's.
Name Origin:
It is a remark about the beauty of the leaves of this hybrid. A continuation of a series of hybrids made by Keith Henderson which includes others like 'Majestic' and 'Glorious'.
All pictures shown belong to Neil Crafter.
Growth Habit:
Hemiepiphyte, active climber
Leaf Blade:
Oblong elongated velvety leaf blades with a deeply cordate base; adaxially dark green and abaxially reddish purple blocks between the veins. Petioles green and terete with white striations along the length of it and raised towards the apex, reddish at apex. Veins a much lighter green color with visible branching of primary lateral veins closer to the margin. Cataphylls marcescent.
Bloom and Fruit:
Not observed.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This hybrid is unique because it retains the ornamental characteristics of both P.verrucosum and P.melanochrysum. It has velvet leaves that are slightly rounder than P.verrucosum but with P.verrucosum’s branching venation. Leaf abaxial is a blushing red while the petioles are roughened. Particularly noticeable is the red blush in the sinus. An extremely attractive hybrid Philodendron worthy of its new name.
